What to Expect on Your First Miami Boat Rental
So you’ve decided to rent a boat in Miami — great choice. There’s no better way to experience the city than from the water. But if it’s your first time renting a boat, you might have a few questions. What do you bring? How does the booking work? Do you need experience? What happens when you get there?
We’ve been doing this since 2006, and we get these questions every day. Here’s everything you need to know before your first Miami boat rental so you can show up relaxed, ready, and excited.
Before You Book
Do You Need Experience?
Yes — and this is one of the most common concerns we hear. You do need some prior boating experience to rent a boat with us. Before you leave the dock, our staff will go over everything: how to operate our boat(but you do need to know the basics), safety procedures, navigation basics, and the best spots to head to that day.
If you’d prefer to skip the wheel entirely and just enjoy the ride, we also offer rentals with one of our licensed captains. Just sit back, relax, and let us handle the rest.
Do You Need a Boating License?
In Florida, anyone born after January 1, 1988 is required to have a Florida Boater Safety Card to operate a vessel. If you fall into this category, don’t worry — you can complete the course entirely online at boat-ed.com in a few hours. It’s easy, inexpensive, and you’ll have your card before your rental day.
If you were born before 1988, no license is required.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
We recommend booking at least a few days ahead, especially on weekends and during peak season (December through April). Miami’s weather is beautiful almost year-round, which means boat rentals fill up fast — particularly on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Same-day bookings are occasionally available, but to guarantee your preferred boat and time slot, book online in advance at boatrentalmiami.rezdy.com.
What to Bring
Pack light but smart. Here’s everything you need for a great day on the water:
Essentials:
- Government-issued photo ID (required for all drivers)
- Credit card for the security deposit
- Cash for gratuity for your captain or crew
For comfort:
- Sunscreen — Miami sun on the water is intense, apply before you arrive
- Sunglasses and a hat
- Light, comfortable clothing — a swimsuit under shorts or a cover-up works perfectly
- Towels
- Water shoes or sandals with a strap
Food and drinks:
- You are welcome to bring your own food, snacks, and beverages including alcohol (for guests 21+)
- A soft-sided cooler works best on a boat
- We provide complimentary ice for your cooler
What to leave at home:
- Heavy bags and unnecessary valuables
- Glass bottles (plastic is safer on the water)
- Anything you’d be heartbroken to lose overboard
Finding Us — Where to Go
We are located at Pier 5, Bayside Marketplace, 401 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132 — right next to the Miami Heat Arena, on the north end of the marina behind Victoria’s Secret.
Parking: The easiest option is the Bayside Marketplace Parking Garage, right on site. There are also several surface lots nearby. If you’re coming by Uber or Lyft, drop off at Bayside Marketplace and walk toward the water — you’ll find us at Pier 5.
Arriving: Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your rental time. This gives you time to check in, complete the paperwork, and get your briefing before heading out on the water.
What Happens When You Arrive
When you get to Pier 5, check in with our team at the dock. You’ll need to show your ID and sign the rental agreement. If you’re the designated driver, you’ll complete a quick safety orientation covering:
- How to start and stop the engine
- Throttle and steering basics
- Navigation rules on Biscayne Bay
- No-wake zones and speed limits
- Safety equipment location (life jackets, fire extinguisher, anchor)
The briefing takes about 10–15 minutes and is straightforward. By the end, you’ll feel confident and ready to go.
Where to Go — Best Spots from Bayside
One of the biggest advantages of departing from Bayside Marketplace is how close you are to Miami’s best waterway destinations. Here are the top spots our guests love:
Haulover Sandbar
Miami’s most famous sandbar, located about 20–25 minutes north of Bayside near the Haulover Inlet. The water is shallow, turquoise, and usually filled with boats on weekends. Drop the anchor, wade in, and enjoy the scene. Great for groups who want a social atmosphere.
Nixon Sandbar (Virginia Key)
About 15 minutes from our dock, this sandbar near Virginia Key offers calmer, quieter waters perfect for families or couples. The water is crystal clear and the vibe is more relaxed than Haulover.
Star Island
Cruise past some of Miami’s most iconic real estate — Star Island is home to celebrities and billionaires, and the views from the water are stunning. It’s a 10-minute ride from Bayside and makes for a great photo opportunity.
Biscayne Bay
The open bay stretches out in front of you the moment you leave the marina. The skyline views, the turquoise water, and the warm breeze make even a simple cruise on the bay an unforgettable experience.
Key Biscayne Sandbar
A slightly longer ride (about 20 minutes), but worth it. The sandbar near Key Biscayne is a local favorite, especially on weekdays when it’s less crowded.
Tip: Ask our team when you arrive — we’ll tell you which spots are best based on that day’s conditions, wind, and tide.
How Long Should You Rent?
We offer two rental durations:
2-Hour Rental ($299) — Perfect for a quick cruise, a sunset trip, or if you want to explore Star Island and Biscayne Bay without committing to a full half-day. Great for first-timers who want to get their feet wet (literally).
4-Hour Rental ($399–$599 depending on boat size) — Ideal if you want to visit a sandbar, spend time anchored in the water, and have a relaxed day on the bay. Most of our guests who want the full Miami water experience opt for 4 hours.
Our advice: if you can swing it, go for 4 hours. Once you’re out there, you won’t want to come back early.
Returning the Boat
When your rental time is up, head back toward Bayside Marketplace and our team will guide you into the dock. We’ll assist with docking — don’t worry if you’ve never docked a boat before, we’ve got you. After returning the boat, your security deposit will be released.
Frequently Asked Questions from First-Timers
Can I bring kids? Yes! Families are welcome. Life jackets in all sizes are available on board. We recommend the 2-hour rental for younger children.
What if it rains? Miami weather can change quickly. If conditions are unsafe, we will reschedule your rental or issue a full refund. Light rain usually passes quickly — we’ll always put your safety first.
Can I bring my dog? Please contact us in advance to ask about our pet policy.
What’s the maximum number of people per boat? Our 20ft boats hold up to 7 people. Our 25ft boat holds up to 10 people.
Is there a bathroom on the boat? Our boats do not have onboard bathrooms. We recommend using the facilities at Bayside Marketplace before departure.
